The Question of Obedience

By October 17, 2008No Comments

Highland, like Israel before them, has always had a problem with obedience. If indeed Israel wanted the pharaohs of this world to let them go to a place apart (the wilderness) to offer worship to God, when they arrived in this place apart, they grumbled and wanted to return to the flesh pots of Egypt.

At Highland’s first Communion service in the building, it was reported that there were 156 present out of a membership of 287. Where were the other 131? Were they all ill, out of town or trapped in a traffic jam? Or were they just yearning for some of the world’s pleasures from which they had been called apart?

On November 2, 1952, it was reported that worship attendance was 135 on that Sunday but that Sunday school attendance had not fallen below 300 on any given Sunday since August. Was studying about God more important than worshipping God? These were questions with which Highland members would continue to struggle in their life together.
