Expanding the Clergy Faith Conversation

By November 4, 2009No Comments

If such faith conversations as described in yesterday’s blog take place, I think there could be some real value in later allowing their respective congregations to see some of the fruit of that conversation. I particularly think that might have value between congregations of different ethnic or economic makeup. Picture an African American and a Korean congregation experiencing such a conversation.

The setting assumes that the prior conversations described yesterday have taken place. The general concept of the conversation is shared with the respective congregations and they are invited to sit in on a followup conversation between their pastors. In this case, it is probably best if some predetermined questions have been designed. I will suggest a few questions but others could be of equal value.

1. As you reflected on your previous conversations, what is a strength in the other pastor’s faith that you particularly admire and why?
2. From what you know about the pastor’s ministry, what is a gift that s/he offers his or her congregation that you think might enrich your congregation?
3. What is one strength in your congregation that you would like to share with the people in the other congregation?
4. What is something you think you and your congregation could learn from the other congregation?
5. What is a theological challenge that you think faces both congregations in our current society?
6. What is a spiritual practice that both congregations could engage in that might open yourselves to a mutual response to God’s call?
7. Where do you see God’s presence at this time?

Well, you get the idea. It is to listen to the movement of the spirit of God in both the clergy and the congregations that enhances and strengthens your relationship as covenant partners in the Body of Christ.
