IS FORCE THE ANSWER TO THREAT?
(This is an excerpt from “Hospitality for Alien Strangers,” to be published in the Fall of 2023) A midwestern city is contained inside a bubble created by Saucers that hover above.)
“About six months into the isolation period, a local news studio gathered several city leaders for an interview. DeWit Freeman, the head of a construction company in the city, was included in a panel. “I was in charge of the use of explosives in the military. I use them all the time in my construction business. You give me the proper explosives; I’ll blast a big enough hole in that bubble that you can drive a Mack truck through it.”
Jess arranged with the mayor to have members of the council present to hear DeWit or Dunk’s proposal……..
“I once busted through a whole mountain. You help me gather up the explosives and some men to do what I tell them, and we’ll bust the hell out of that bubble.”
Jess turned to his associate, Phil. Give him anything he wants, and let’s see if we can break through before I lose my mind.”
“Wait a minute,” said Eric. “I want to bust out of here as much as anyone, but we don’t have any idea what will happen if we do breakthrough.”
“What are you talking about,” demanded Jess. “What could be worse than being locked in here?”
“What if he cracks the bubble, and it all falls in on us,” asked Floyd.
Or maybe we cross the line, and the saucerites conclude we aren’t worth the trouble, so they blast us to smithereens and prepare to repopulate the earth without waiting any longer,” said Kara? “That’s sort of what we did to several Native American tribes.”
When the city is threatened, it reverts to the use of counterforce to defeat its enemy.
